Yep, Joss Whedon did "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and the ill-fated "Firefly" sci-fi series. Firefly was cancelled after 14 episodes thanks to the network's inability to recognize a Good Thing(tm) and Joss went ahead and made it into a movie - Serenity.
If you haven't seen Firefly, I highly recommend it, even if it wasn't complete.

The Buffy RPG is also pretty good. The system nicely matches the feel on TV.
